While on the Worcestershire Beacon at about 2.30pm on Sunday afternoon, I was fortunate enough to witness the phenomenon known as the "Brocken Spectre".
This happens when there is a layer of mist below the ridge top and the sun casts the shadow of the observer onto the mist making the shadow appear much larger than it really is.
On this occasion the shadow produced was surrounded by a bright rainbow halo. What a pity I did not have my camera with me at the time!
It shows that even though the weather can look bad from below, it is often worth the effort of getting up onto the hills to witness such events.
