HOW many Worcester City footballers can you name that have never been on the losing side during their career at St George's Lane?

The statistical books may spring up the odd player who, over time, has made the briefest of appearances without ever sampling that beaten feeling.

But can any match or better the worthy record held by the safe hands of James Coates, who seems likely to end his association with City this week if a trial at Coca-Cola League Two club Boston United proves successful.

Played seven, won five, drawn two, lost none. It's certainly impressive and likely not to have gone beyond the notice of Boston manager Steve Evans as he looks to appoint a goalkeeper to challenge Nathan Abbey.

John Barton has been fortunate to land two gifted 'keepers on loan while Danny McDonnell took time out to recover from separate injuries to his ribs.

Aaron Kerr made a huge impression among City supporters during his loan spell in September, earning plaudits and plenty of friends with his outstanding talent and infectious personality.

Coates has won over the fans in similar fashion and not once has the Welsh stopper let down Barton or the club since stepping out for his City debut at Southport last month.

The 19-year-old was under the spotlight that day, baited by a noisy Haig Avenue crowd all afternoon, yet Coates came through unscathed and was a key performer as City earned a precious point.

His most memorable display came a week later at home to Altrincham which also included his finest moment when flinging himself in stoppage time to produce a magnificent double save, denying the Robins a share of the spoils.

Coates has all the qualities to succeed at a higher level, possessing terrific reflexes, handling and shot-stopping ability. His kicking is exemplary and he's not afraid to shout the odds at his defenders too, regardless of their age, as Carl Heeley and Colin Hoyle will testify after Saturday's FA Trophy win over Prescot Cables.

The Manchester-born goalkeeper has admitted loving every minute at City and claims he has a lot to thank the club for.

Coates said: "Worcester have been a massive help to me, getting my name about and helping put a bit of confidence back in myself. I've absolutely loved it and I would consider staying at the club if I can't get back into football full-time.

"I would say my career has started at Worcester and now I'm now looking to build on that. I'm hoping Boston United will offer me something because they don't have a number two goalkeeper.

"I've played for their reserves a couple of games in the Pontins League. I think I've been doing quite well and I've made one or two good saves. I'm at Boston on trial and I'm training with them all this week. They've told me they will make a decision on me this Friday."

Let's hope they do the right thing and give Coates the chance he deserves.
