ANIMALS at a rescue centre near Worcester are desperate for loving homes in the New Year.

Danemere Animal Rescue in Tibberton is full to capacity with double its usual number of dogs, cats and rabbits after a surge of unwanted winter pets.

The situation reflects new RSPCA statistics that show the charity receives more calls about abandoned dogs and cats at Christmas than any other animal. It is thought that, as the financial pressures of Christmas grow, families decide to ditch their pets rather than forgo presents and treats.

Supervisor Dave Lannie said: "I don't know why we have had so many animals in - we had a lot of dogs in before and during Christmas.

"A lot of people have called in over Christmas to have pets re-homed and we've not been able to take them in.

"We've got some super animals here that would make lovely family pets."

Mr Lannie added that the situation was stretching resources to the limit.

"It's costing us money all the time and we've also had some very big vets' bills," he said.

"We always need funding to cope with the extra animals we are taking in."

He said people should think carefully about the time and patience a pet needs before they buy.

The centre, in Plough Road currently has more than 50 cats, 25 dogs and 10 rabbits.

In December alone, more than 30 dogs and more than 50 cats passed through the doors.

Earlier in the month, the Evening News reported that seven puppies were abandoned in the Tolladine area of Worcester.

The seven-week-old German Shepherd cross dogs were rescued by RSPCA inspectors after they were dumped in a garage - two later died.

They are being cared for by the Protection of Unwanted Puppies Society (PUPS) near Worcester and will be ready for re-homing in a few weeks.

Sheila Tremellen, of PUPS said: "They are eating well and running about a bit - they are totally adorable.

"I'm very strict about where they go because I love them and want someone else to love them too."

Although 21 people have expressed an interest, further enquiries about these or any other puppies can be made by calling PUPS on 01905 620340.
