HOW rich of I M Jarvis to remind me of my duty "to give the facts, not fiction," while he postulates and hypothesises about a Britain under a German Third Reich, an event that never took place (You Say, Wednesday, December 11)

I M Jarvis' hypothesis lacks the factors of the human endeavour and the unforeseen events. Harold MacMillan once said "Events! Events my dear boy." And here are a few factual examples.

After the First World War, the British Government promised the nation "a land fit for the heroes." The Depression and the Jarrow March ensued instead.

Victorious

Following the Second World War, A victorious Britain granted independence to most of her colonies, because after two world wars, the British Empire was a spent force.

Western Capitalism has, more or less, seen off Communism and Marxism. Several European countries managed to topple their dictatorial regimes, through so-called velvet revolutions.

Present-day terrorism is the new threat to Western Capitalism.

I invite I M Jarvis to heed his own advice in future, before presuming to lecture me about fact and fiction.
