COMMUTERS faced train cancellations at the weekend and the likelihood of delays throughout January after a leading rail provider cut services by 10 per cent.
Central Trains had to introduce emergency timetables after drivers from the Aslef union failed to agree overtime conditions and declined to work extra hours.
The operator had to cancel all its services on Sunday, January 2 - as Sunday work is classed as overtime - and has had to draw up new timetables until the situation is resolved.
Fewer trains from Kidderminster to Birmingham Snow Hill and the Black Country are so far the only changes in Worcestershire, but Central is urging passengers to double-check before they travel.
"We tried to sort the problem out over Christmas but Aslef refused to renew the overtime agreement.
"It's not how we wanted to start the New Year but we are hoping to have it resolved as quickly as possible," said Claire Barratt, a spokeswoman for Central.
"The timetables are subject to change but we will endeavour to keep it to just 10 per cent (fewer services)."
Central provides the bulk of services across the Midlands and into East Anglia, the North West and Wales.
The Aslef union is balloting members, closing on Monday, January 17, over industrial action in support of two members who have had their grading reduced.
The new timetables will run until further notice, but there may be further cuts if Aslef members take action later in the month.
