MALVERN Rugby Club have gone to the top of the Midlands Two West table after a superb 7-31 victory at Kenilworth last Saturday.

David Robins, Malvern director of rugby, said: "To come away, not play particularly well but still win by a 24 point margin is the sign of a good side. We could have had a further three tries but for some over-complication and we also lost our shape a bit, especially in the first half whilst the half backs got used to each other.

"We again had some superb line-out play, I estimate we stole about 40 per cent of Kenilworth's ball, and Tom Davies again showed what a class act he is. Our defence was excellent, soaking up whatever they threw at us, and Eastwood, although still not fully fit, gave us an extra dimension in the centre. Julien Davies put in some immense tackles in a gritty performance, and although Andy Longley had a shaky start with his place-kicking, his tactical kicking from hand was again superb.

"This was a yardstick match against known opposition and a comprehensive win. The away matches are vital if we are to be promoted this year and today we showed we have gained that necessary edge to go the whole way."

Tomorrow (Saturday), Malvern entertain Nuneaton Old Edwardians at Spring Lane with 3pm kick-off.
