MALVERN Rugby Club were victorious on Saturday and crushed visiting Old Coventrians at Spring Lane 41-5 for their second Midlands Two West win out of two.
However, as director of rugby David Robins pointed out: "We have played two of the three promoted sides in our first two matches. The benchmark will be when we visit Kenilworth in a fortnight, they are always a strong test for any side, especially on their own patch.
"Today, we had total dominance up front, so although Coventrians had some useful looking backs, they were starved of good ball. Any possession they did get was harried by our magnificent back row and we were probably worth a few more tries than the score.
"Alex Thomas is back to the form which earned him his 'Dark Destroyer' nickname, whilst Tom Davies has already shown that he is going to be a major player for Malvern. Nick Smith was everywhere again and we will probably appeal his red card as he wasn't the main offender. John Drage and Aidan Ruddock were great ball winners and carriers whilst the midfield and backs won't get so much ball against some of the more established teams in the division.
"A well rounded display by everyone gave our supporters a great afternoon's entertainment."
Tomorrow (Saturday) most teams are involved in the Intermediate Cup, so Malvern will play a friendly at Spring Lane.
The opposition was due to be a touring side from Pwllhelli in North Wales, but they have withdrawn so Malvern will now play Moseley U21s, where their pace will surely be tested. The game kicks off at 3pm.
