JOE Rowe took the bronze medal in the Midlands Cyclo Cross Championships veterans race at Darley Moor, Derbyshire.

On a course with a mixture of muddy climbs and boggy grassland, the Wyre Forest Cycle Racing Club member attacked off the front on the fast first section, then maintained a high pace, holding off a chasing group of five riders.

With two laps remaining, he suffered a mechanical problem, and by the time he reached the pits for a replacement bike had lost his lead and was down to fifth. A determined chase saw Rowe back in third place at the line.

He will now focus on the National Championships, held later this month at Abergavenny.

Two club riders took part in the Worcester St John's Cycling Club Boxing Day 10-mile time trail around the lanes of Norton, Kempsey and Pirton. Veterans David Prior and Alex Humphries returned to competition after almost 20-years lay-off from racing, but Prior finished eighth and third fastest veteran, in 34 minutes 30 seconds, and Humphries came 11th in 36-31. The overall winner was Sean Dyson of the home club in 29-56.

Training will continue on Sundays throughout the year, leaving from the Brindley Arms, Stourport at 9.30am, for a 40-50 mile ride at a moderate pace. Anyone is welcome to join club riders for further details contact Richard Pedersen on 07870 330435 or visit www.wfcrc.org.uk
