STOURPORT Swifts put their injury worries behind them to produce an excellent match-winning display at home to Broms-grove Rovers on Monday.

And it was diminutive striker Mark Atkinson who steered them to a 2-1 win with a first half double against his former club.

He opened the scoring after 14 minutes, slotting the ball into the empty net after a Duncan Willetts cross had been missed by Mark Crisp and cumbersome Rovers stopper Ian Gandy.

And there was more to come from Atkinson just two minutes later when he rifled a 25-yard drive beyond Gandy after weaving his way past two defenders.

The pocket rocket went close to netting a third before the break but just failed to get a touch on a Duncan Willetts cross to the far post.

Rovers took time to settle but went close to reducing the arrears when the lively Paul Szewczyk found himself unmarked in front of goal only to loft his show over the crossbar from six yards.

The striker made amends on the half-hour when the Swifts defence failed to deal with a through ball and Szewczyk drilled his shot beyond the diving Aaron O'Malley in the home goal.

Rovers stepped up the pace after the break but they failed to find a way through some solid defending, brilliantly marshalled by skipper Craig Webb.

Just as the points looked to be in the bag, there was a late scare for Swifts when Bromsgrove substitute Richard Burgess unleashed a fierce 25-yard drive that thumped against the crossbar.

The win was the perfect antidote to the 2-1 defeat at title hopefuls Mangotsfield United on New Year's Day in a game blighted by driving rain and a gale force wind.

Shane Hobbs opened the scoring for the West Country side late in the first half only for Mark Crisp to volley home an equaliser three minutes after the restart.

Mangotsfield bagged their winner on 55 minutes when Robbie Claridge found the net for his 13th goal of the season.
