ORGANISERS of a special parade to mark the diamond anniversary of the ending of the Second World War and VE Day are calling on businesses and groups to dig deep to help.

The Pershore & District Royal Naval Association has set up a VE60 committee in partnership with Wychavon District Council to organise a full military service to mark the event.

Serving officers from each of the forces will take the salute in Pershore High Street on Sunday, May 8 this year to celebrate the 60th anniversary.

But, in order for the event to go ahead, £5,000 is needed from businesses, shopkeepers and individuals to fund it. Wychavon District Council have already promised some cash support.

The committee has secured the services of the Dartmouth Marine Band from the Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth.

It will be a district event combining the three Wychavon towns of Evesham, Pershore and Droitwich Spa.

Pay for ceremonial

Chairman of the RNA Pershore & District, and VE60 committee, Councillor Ted Annis said the money will pay for the band and The Royal Navy Guard of Honour among other expenses.

If the money is not raised, then the event will not go ahead.

Cllr Annis said: "This is a major achievement and will, no doubt, be a great boost. Not only to the district, but also to those wishing to show their respects for the diamond anniversary of the ending of the Second World War in Europe.

"I cannot believe that we have been lucky enough to secure the Dartmouth Marine Band."
