A new executive director has been appointed by the Three Counties Agricultural Society.

Nick Vincent, aged 55, of Cheltenham, took up the post on January 1.

The society, based at the showground just outside Malvern, is a major part of the town's scene, staging popular events such as the Malvern Spring Garden Show, Three Counties Show and the Malvern Autumn and Countryside Show.

As well as taking charge of about 30 staff, Mr Vincent wants to develop the business while working more closely with both local residents and education providers.

He takes the place of Gareth Smith, who left the society last year after 12 months in the role. He had been the finance manager since 1998.

Mr Smith's appointment to the top post proved controversial, following the resignations of chief executive Chris Milne and showground manager Tony Halls.

Mr Vincent comes to the society after working as a consultant to a wide range of small companies.

Before 1998, he was managing director of Tewkesbury-based SAPA Building Systems, following ten years as its finance director.

In his early career, he spent four years working in central Africa and has travelled extensively on business in Europe.

He said: "I'm very much looking forward to the challenge of my new role and aim to raise the brand image of the showground to attract more quality clients.

"Improving the infrastructure is fundamental to improving our image in order to make the showground a place where people really want to come. We can only do this over time and if we do it professionally. I will be working more closely with the local business community and residents to achieve our aims."

Mr Vincent is married with two children and outside work enjoys squash, golf and occasional skiing.
