MALVERN cycling club VC Sevale's annual freewheel competition was decisively won by veteran rider Eric Gorton.

On a freezing morning, the club chairman managed to ride nearly as far as the railway bridge from the lay-by just below British Camp on the A449, heading towards Ledbury.

The long serving member somehow managed to coax his machine over the small rise in the road where all the other riders had frustratingly freewheeled to a stop. He then picked up speed again and nearly reached the bridge about a quarter of a mile away.

Even Margaret Pantling and partner on the tandem didn't get close. Eric is well known in the club for his demon descending on club rides and he put his skills to the test and beat some very aerodynamic competition.

The ladies' race was won by Eric's wife, Trish Gorton. Second in the mens' event was Tony Knight and third Brian Mellor.

On Sunday (January 9) the club ride is to Monkton and is to be led by Henry Walker, distance approximately 55 miles. Meet 9am at the bus shelter in Barnards Green, any reasonably fit riders very welcome, bring some money for tea and cake.

On Sunday, January 16, the club holds its reliability ride. An event that is aimed mainly at the more competitive rider but is open to all riders wishing to stretch their legs and lungs after the holiday period.

There are two routes, Tewkesbury (35 miles) and a circuit of Bredon (50 miles), also a choice of fast or slow groups. The event starts from Barnards Green Cricket Club at 9.30am, entry costs £1. Sign on from about 9am.
