TURNER'S Tae Kwon Do's most successful student rounded off a triumphant year by taking a bronze medal at the AIMAA Open Martial Arts World Championships in Dublin.
Katie Cairns competed in many tournaments up and down the country in 2004, gathering a large collection of medals that include four gold, four silvers and three bronzes. Ray Turner (head instructor of Turner's Tae Kwon Do) then decided that Katie should travel to Ireland to pit her skills against some of the best fighters in the world.
Katie entered the girls' 14-16 all belt continuous sparring event. This was a large category with some very talented competitors. After many hard fights Katie made her way to the semi-finals, where she was up against a 3rd degree black belt. Katie fought well and it was a close match.
After an initial split decision from the judges, the fight was then given to her opponent.
Asked how she felt about her achievements, Katie said: "I'm really proud of what I've done, but I couldn't have done it without the help and support of my instructors."
