STOURPORT Swifts could not build on Monday's fine win against Bromsgrove Rovers as they lost 2-1 at home to Ashford Town.

The two-goal hero against Rovers, Mark Atkinson, had two early opportunities to grab another goal in Southern League Division One West.

But the visitors broke the deadlock in the fourth minute when Aaron O'Malley failed to gather a corner and Russell Canderton tapped home at the far post.

Atkinson was still causing problems and Paul Burgess pulled off a great save from the diminutive front man.

Debutant Gareth Jennings also went close for Swifts and a Mark Jones free-kick flew wide as Stourport finally exerted some decent pressure.

At the start of the second-half, Dan Bragoli twice went close for Swifts.

But it was not all one-way traffic as Scott Harris was unlucky not to score for the visitors as his shot was deflected wide of the goal.

Ashford went two up in the 61st minute when Anthony Eggington capitalised on another error by O'Malley and fired in from close range.

Stourport immediately made three changes and for the first time in the match started to play their passing game to open up the Ashford defence.

Andy Checketts went close and then got a goal back as a rasping 25-yard drive found the top corner of the net.

Swifts threw more men forward and looked unlucky not to be awarded a penalty with five minutes left when Duncan Willetts was pulled down in the box.

Despite lots of late possession from Stourport, the visitors' defence stayed strong to become the seventh visiting team to leave with all three points this season.
