NIMBLE fingered Droitwich residents are invited to the first session of a new matchstick building club on Thursday.

Gifted Hanbury pensioner Terry Hickman, who created a replica of Victorian lamppost using almost 5,000 matchsticks, has set up the club for senior citizens and the disabled.

The first session is on Thursday from 9am to 1pm at the Heritage Centre, in Droitwich.

Like Mr Hickman, members will use matchsticks, glue and varnish to build sculptures of their choice.

However, he is looking to town businesses to donate money or equipment such as glue and varnish.

He has already received generous donations from Travis Perkins in Bromsgrove and Homebase in Worcester.

"I am having difficulty getting hold of matches," said Mr Hickman.

"Apparently they are made in Hungary but I have been on the phone to companies in London to see if they can get hold of some for me."

The pensioner is shelling out for hire of the hall from his own pension so is looking to townsfolk for help.

"The club is for senior citizens but mostly the disabled and is an opportunity for them to meet one another and socialise," said the retired Court Close resident.

Anyone who can help or who is interested in getting involved is asked to call Mr Hickman on 01527 821757.
