NO matter how often I see this wonderful Verdi opera, I still get a buzz out of that glorious music, from the excitement of the opening party scene, to the emotional ending.

I cannot imagine anyone singing the role of Violetta, the "fallen woman" Dumas fils knew so well, better than Jolanta Zmurko, who has a beautiful, and strong, soprano voice. We saw her progress from the jolly party-goer, to the frail consumptive. Surely no-one could have failed to be moved by her final act performance.

Maciej Krzystyniak also gave an excellent performance, as Gergio Germont, and in his second-act duets with Violetta, there was an almost tangible "electricity" between them, as he persuaded her to give up the man she loved for the sake of his family's name.

The minor role of Flora was taken by mezzo-soprano Agnieszka Rehlis, and I would love to hear her in a bigger role.

Marek Szymanski, took the role of Violetta's lover, Alfredo. He has a rather unusual voice, not unpleasant, but sometimes he sounded almost strangulated. However he looked the part and acted extremely well.

The costumes were sumptuous, the sets minimal, and indeed the entire performance was a pleasure to watch and listen to. I must also mention their orchestra, which added to the enjoyment. This production has certainly whetted my appetite to see this company again.
