PRACTISING safe sex is not just an issue for the young, a group of Droitwich Spa pensioners claim.

Droitwich Spa Area Forum for Older People is urging the town's grey army to get clued up on sexually transmitted diseases in its newsletter, The Challenger.

It follows a talk from experts at the South Worcestershire Primary Care Trust (PCT), who revealed sexual disease across the generations was on the increase.

Sheila Neary, the forum's spokeswoman for health, said: "Everyone had a bit of a giggle when the topic of sexual health amongst older people came up, but it is a serious issue.

"People are getting out more than they used to, and starting new relationships.

"Whilst there may be no risk of pregnancy, this is still no excuse not to take precautions as there are other things you can catch," she said.

The newsletter says: "It is important to remember that sexual desire does not go away just because you get older. Sex can be great fun providing it is consenting and fun.

"Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are not just an issue for younger people."

Sheena Stuart, of the PCT's sexual health department, confirmed they had spoken to the members of the forum recently.

"Older people need to be just as aware about sexual diseases as younger people."

She added: "There has a general increase in sexual diseases across all age groups."

The latest edition of The Challenger also provides contact details for anyone worried about sexual transmitted diseases.

They include the John Anthony Centre in Worcester on 01905 351601 and The Arrowside Centre, at the Alexandra Hospital, in Redditch, on 01527 516398.
