RECORD numbers of passengers passed through the UK's major airports last year, figures out today showed.

The seven airports run by the BAA company handled 140.1 million travellers in 2004 - a 6.9 per cent increase on 2003.

The biggest increase was at Southampton, where numbers shot ahead by 25.7 per cent to 1.53 million.

Stansted numbers were up 11.7 per cent at 20.9 million, while Gatwick rose 5 per cent to nearly 31.4 million and Heathrow increased 6.2 per cent to 67.1 million.
