ALTHOUGH this Phipps Cup game was a poor spectacle the result was never in doubt as Powick had won previous meetings by large margins.
OAK APPLE 0, POWICK 3
The first opportunity saw Sam Dakin cross to the back post to Dean Drinkwater who headed just inches wide. Henderson and Mike Cole worked hard against the conditions to instigate a controlled passing game. Cole was able to release Matt Cole who delivered a good cross, which fell to Dakin who blasted the ball over from distance.
Powick opened the scoring when Richard Yapp passed the ball back to his goalkeeper who was hounded by Stu Harvey. He won the ball and then passed it to an offside-looking Drinkwater, who fired in from close range.
Oak Apple's only attempt on goal in the half was by Richard Green, who never really troubled goalkeeper Steve Newman, who looked comfortable throughout
Goal number two came moments later when Mike Cole found himself in space on the right and crossed to Drinkwater, who headed in his second. Drinkwater nearly completed a first half hat-trick but the Oak Apple keeper pulled off an excellent one-handed save.
The second half Powick were camped in Oak Apple's half for long periods and it was a matter of windy conditions and poor finishing that the score- line stayed respectable.
Kevin Downes, Jason Howes and Dave Beats showed superb composure by bringing the ball out of defence and added to the attacking play.
Dave Beats was a fine example of a great attacking full back, overlapping on numerous occasions causing plenty of problems. Notably he provided a brilliant cross to be met by Drinkwater to give the keeper no chance and complete his hat-trick.
Tomorrow (Saturday) Powick meet Kempsey United at home. Meet at Powick playing fields at 1.30pm, any problems or players needing transport ring Andrew Brown or Lee Caveman.
