THE need for a minor injuries unit, the number of beds proposed and the site location were among the main concerns raised at a public meeting about the new Malvern hospital.

Mike Ridley, chief executive of South Worcestershire Primary Care Trust, fielded questions from an audience of about 15 people at Upton Memorial Hall yesterday (Thursday).

Mr Ridley reiterated that the PCT was considering three sites for the hospital and was in need of a partner to help fund the project.

He promised that a business case would be drawn up as soon as possible and stated his intention to move plans along swiftly.

"There have been business cases for this new hospital down through the years," he said.

"It's time that this business case came to be a reality and that's my determination."

Upton Town councillor Eric White said he felt there should be more beds than the 24 proposed.

"That really doesn't give any larger amount of beds than there are at the moment," he said.

Pat Merrick, of the Friends of Malvern Hospital, said she would like to see the Seaford Court site used. She also highlighted the need for a minor injuries unit at the new hospital.

However, Mr Ridley said it would be too costly and was not viable.

Other issues raised included requests for alternative therapies, such as homeopathy, along with dialysis facilities to be incorporated into the service.

The PCT has so far had between 150 and 200 replies to its consultation.
