I AM appalled by the BBC's decision to broadcast Gerry Springer - The Opera. As a Christian I am deeply offended and distressed by the programme's portrayal of Jesus Christ uttering obscene language, which is nothing less than absolute blasphemy.
I think the controller of BBC 2, Roly Keating's argument that it is a "multi-award winning show" and there are "many viewers who cannot get to see it in the theatre in London" is weak and lacking in substance, and is no justification to broadcast a programme that he states "confronts people with extremes of taste and behaviour" (Radio Times, January 8 - 14 P12).
Does Keating see the BBC's role in British society as confrontational or a provocateur? If so, whatever might we expect next?
Am I mistaken in thinking that blasphemy laws still exist in this country?
I wonder if the BBC would broadcast a show that depicts outright racism, or slanders Islam in a similar manner?
I very much doubt it would have the courage to do so.
