WORCESTERSHIRE left out Andy Bichel for their Frizzell County Championship Division One match which opened at Surrey today.
The Australian paceman, who has taken just 18 wickets in ten Championship appearances so far this season, was replaced by Nadeem Malik.
County director of cricket Tom Moody said: "It was a decision by the management that he needed a rest. He's worked hard without having a lot of luck. And we simply thought he would benefit from the chance to freshen up."
Nadeem opened the attack with fellow paceman Matt Mason after Surrey had decided to bat after winning the toss.
Scott Newman and Richard Clinton made a steady start and took their side to 26-0 after six overs.
