INMATES at Bromsgrove Workhouse had enjoyed the many gifts given them over the Christmas holidays. Lord Windsor from Hewell had donated evergreens to decorate the institution as well as six rabbits for patients in the Infirmary. The Messenger Company had kindly promised to supply four free copies of the newspaper every week for a year.
THE annual New Year distribution of beef to employees of the Salt Union in Droitwich took place on Saturday. A total of 2,600lbs was given out.
THE Messenger published a letter from Greville Walpole, general secretary of the National Association for the Suppression of Bad Language. In it he spoke of the crusade to outlaw foul language and an idea to distribute leaflets setting out their aims at football and cricket matches.
WORCESTSHIRE County Council was experiencing problems obtaining supplies of reasonably priced coal for its schools, and managers were being asked to make their own arrangements. Recently the council had been forced to pay 30/- (£1.50) a ton for a load of fuel for Stoke Prior School.
THE annual treat for the poor, aged widows and orphans living in Bromsgrove and Stoke Prior was held in the town's Drill Hall. Some 370 adults and 130 children sat down to a capital meal of meat sandwiches, bread and butter, cake and tea. After the entertainment gifts of oranges, sweets, bread and tobacco as well as useful household items were distributed. The evening concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.
