HERE, in about 1943, are the Special Constables who policed Wythall and Alvechurch during the war years.

The picture was taken at Redditch Police Station, which in those days was in Church Street in the town centre, and was loaned by Frederick Leonard, who is now a sprightly 97 and lives in Ann Road, Wythall.

Mr Leonard, who is standing second from right, is also seen in a more recent picture with his late wife, Evelyn.

He said: "In those far off days, Wythall had four regular full-time policeman on duty in the parish, a sergeant and Pc at the station and a Pc at Headley Heath and Hollywood.

"They got around on bicycles and foot - no police cars in those days."

Mr Leonard added: "The blackout was in force, many foods were rationed and beer was in short supply. It all sounds very miserable but, in fact, there was a friendly community spirit everywhere.

"We don't want any more war but a bit more friendliness would not go amiss today!"

Mr Leonard would like to know if there are others in the picture still alive today.
