IT is little wonder this movie, which charts the effects of the American Civil War on a group of people whose lives are intertwined by love, desperation and sheer hopelessness, has been nominated for 13 BAFTAs and is expected to shine at the Oscars.
Boasting an all-star cast including British actor and hunk Jude Law as injured soldier Inman, Nicole Kidman as his pre-war sweetheart Ada and Renee Zellweger as drifter Ruby, Cold Mountain is both heart-warming and distressing - but thoroughly enjoyable throughout.
Directed by Anthony Minghella, the film following wounded soldier Inman's dangerous - and illegal - return to Cold Mountain from the front line of the American Civil War, powerfully contrasts nave hopes and expectations of war with the brutal reality of it - and includes something for every film taste.
Horrific battle scenes and a tender love story are juxtaposed with comic moments supplied by the outstanding Renee Zellweger, who definitely deserved her Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress.
Another actor worthy of a mention in this excellent cast is Jack White of rockers The White Stripes, who stars as Ruby's unlikely love interest and supplied music for the soundtrack.
