It was a most enjoyable December evening when the branch held its own celebration to mark the occasion of the 75th anniversary year of the West Midland Bird Club.
The evening commenced with a talk by Jan Harrigan, from the region's Swan Rescue Centre, who gave an insight into her work with the rescue of swans from traumatic accidents and incidents. Swan Rescue is a voluntary organisation so veterinary fees, medicines, running costs, etc., of around £30,000 a year, have to be raised by ongoing fundraising projects - donations are always warmly welcomed. The evening continued with wine and finger bites, a toast proposed by the club's chairman, Jim Winsper, and social chat.
The Swan Rescue Centre often seeks expert advice from the deputy chairman of the West Midland Bird Club, Bery Coleman and, following on from Swan Rescue, Mr Coleman will be giving an illustrated talk, entitled Mute Swans, on January 26 at St Oswald's Church Centre, Broadwaters, starting at 7.30pm. On January 30, the field trip will be to the RSPB Sandwell Valley Nature Reserve.
Anyone interested in wildlife, birdlife and conservation in general is welcome to join both our indoor meetings and field trips.
