KILLER superbug MRSA could soon be a thing of the past - thanks to a revolutionary new product available exclusively in Droitwich Spa.

Photocatworks Limited has just signed a deal with its Japanese partners to sell LightCLEAN, a spray-on coating which claims to blitz all bacteria and viruses, including MRSA.

Last Wednesday, health chiefs at Worcestershire Royal Hospital gave the light sensitive spray the thumbs up.

It will now be fast tracked by the Rapid Review Panel, set up by Dr John Reid, Government Minster for Health, to find ways to tackle the killer bug.

If it is approved it could be used in hospitals up and down the country.

In the last year, about 100,000 people contracted an infection while in hospital, of which more than 5,000 died.

Chris Gummer, spokesman for Photocatworks Ltd, explained how the spray works. He said: "The material called LightCLEAN is one stage of a three-pronged attack on hospital germs. Once the room is disinfected, the coating is applied to all the surfaces - from light switches, walls and beds to curtains and chairs. The coating is also impregnated onto the gauze of a powered air filter forming the third part of the defence.

"The result is a room with no hiding places for germs."

He added: "The coating will destroy odours and actually keeps painted surfaces clean.

"It safely decomposes cooking oil vapours and cigarette tars into water and carbon dioxide so it is to be tested out in several hotels and restaurants locally."

LightCLEAN is more widely available in Japan and Korea, but Droitwich is the first place in the UK where it will be supplied.

"This could be the turning point in the fight against this killer bug," added Mr Gummer.
