HEALTH officials say they should soon be ready to submit plans for the new Alcester Hospital.

There has been concern in the town that the project, which has suffered a number of setbacks, was heading for another delay.

But South Warwickshire Primary Care Trust, which is working with a consortium of local GPs on the scheme, said a design team had been appointed and "assuming all goes well with this" a planning application can be lodged with Stratford District Council. Building work would then begin in the autumn.

Members of Alcester Town Council have expressed concern over progress of the project, following promises made at a public meeting last year. They wanted more information but have agreed to wait for the report of the design team before pressing the PCT further.

A spokesman for the trust said: "The PCT continues to work closely with a consortium of local GPs to develop improved provision for GP surgeries and new hospital facilities on the current Alcester Hospital site.

"We do understand that there is significant interest in the work and the Primary Care Trust will be issuing updates jointly with the GP practices whenever a significant point is reached. We would also be happy to send copies of these to people should they prefer."
