COUNCILLORS' concerns about pupils' safety if an Alcester school is extended have been allayed.

Despite backing proposals to build the extension at St Nicholas' Primary School, in St Faith's Road, Alcester town council clerk Derrick Ward said Warwickshire County Council's plans had not given enough consideration to drivers and pedestrians.

The amalgamation of the former Alcester Infants Schools and St Faith's Junior school onto the site would have prompted an increase in the number of parents dropping off their children, a matter of concern for the town council.

But at a Regulatory Committee, held yesterday, it was decided five conditions would be put in place to increase pupils' safety.

The decision comes after a letter was circulated to the county council's education department and county councillors, including Alcester's Susan Juned.

In the letter, deputy town clerk Christine Tolman said the effects of the amalgamation of the schools should be studied by an independent organisation.

She added the site seemed near saturation with proposals and there was insufficient play space, not enough staff parking and only one disabled parking bay.

One of the conditions since attached to the proposal is to install a road safety zone near to the school. A traffic plan will aim to cope with any increased congestion.

Stratford District councillor Mrs Juned said she had been taking part in discussions with the chief education officer, portfolio holder and county council officers since proposals were put forward a year ago.

She said she welcomed the decision to impose certain conditions and had already been making investigations to ensure conditions were safe for children and parking was adequate.

Mrs Juned added: "This means we can now try and negotiate improvements on top of those basic conditions."
