THE Civic Charity Banquet has been postponed for a month while renovation work at the Guildhall is carried out.
The work, costing almost £600,000, aims to bring the 18th Century building in line with the Disability Discrimination Act, which demands unhindered access to all publicly-owned buildings.
However, installation of the lift has meant that, on health and safety grounds, the number of people allowed in the hall has been restricted to 100 from its normal 200.
"We're waiting for the work to be completed and more people can be allowed in there," said city council spokesman, Bob Blandford.
The banquet was due to take place in March but has now been scheduled for April.
Other measures being installed at the Grade 1 Listed Building include a toilet for the disabled and wheelchair access to the second-floor council chamber.
The original oak staircase is to be extended and substantial repairs are also being carried out.
