MORE than 200 tonnes of rubbish, including sections of asbestos, have been removed from a Worcester eyesore.
Action at the derelict former Hylton Road wholesale fruit and vegetable market was taken yesterday when Worcester City Council issued enforcement notices following a fire before the Christmas period.
Asbestos dust was spilled into the air and abandoned gas canisters exploded during the blaze.
"We only took the enforcement notice and threat of prosecution as a last resort. But now let's hope we can look forward to some sympathetic use for what is, after all, still a prime location with a bright future," said Councillor Derek Prodger, responsible for keeping the city clean, green and safe.
