We are writing to express our grave concerns regarding the plans for the so-called re-development of Stratfords waterfront.
We fear for the future of one of Stratford's most charming features- the chain ferry across the river, just yards away from the proposed sight of the bridge. Mr Sam Gee has been operating this ferry for 20 years, and it is one of the only remaining examples of such a ferry in Britain today.
Is this not precisely the sort of attraction that Stratford should be encouraging, rather than building yet another Norman Foster bridge to turn Stratford into a cloned tourist destination. The ferry has enduring charm which will last for decades to come, whereas in 10 years time, we feel sure the bridge will look outdated and shabby! What need for a bridge when it's shorter by water!
Phillip and Kathryn, Stratford.
