A DROITWICH teenager who is jetting off to America for his second Camp America trip is hoping to inspire other young people to do the same.

Luke Hogarth spent the summer of 2004 at Pierce camp, Birchmont, in New Hampshire and enjoyed himself so much he is planning to return this summer.

"The best two months of my life were spent in a cabin with 10 children and two other counsellors," he said.

"Don't get me wrong - those two months were hard work, but ultimately, it was all worth it for the experience of a lifetime"

It was the first time the 18-year-old, from Nightingale Close, had lived and worked away from home.

He jetted off to New York City from Heathrow, where he was met by the Camp America staff as well as other participants on the programme.

"As we shared our excitement, nervousness and worries, I suddenly realised I wasn't as alone as I thought I was," he said.

Luke acted as a mentor and counsellor for youngsters aged nine to 12 at the camp.

He said he now intends to go back in each of his university summers, each time exploring a new section of America.

"This year I may go to Miami, Florida, then again I may go to Las Vegas, who knows? Summer camp is now a huge part of my life and if my summers weren't spent at camp, I would probably be at home doing a summer job like most students."

Luke, who is planning to study sports science at Birmingham University, added: "Be different. Take a step away from the norm, it's a decision I have never regretted.
