The January meeting started with the singing of Jerusalem.

President Betty Wolsey welcomed a good attendance, which included one new member and visitor.

Margaret Chance was thanked for her floral arrangement and for the past efforts in providing the requirements for group craftwork. News of former members was given and plans for future outings outlined.

Following her introduction to the meeting, Ingrid Pasteur gave a presentation on the efforts made since 1960 to provide an education for the boys of Uganda.

Charity funded schools have been provided, initially for the boys, followed by efforts to encourage families to also get their daughters to attend.

English is the main spoken language.

There can be up to 60 children in a class but they are eager to learn. Education and improved communication skills provide a better quality of life and improved job prospects.

Examples of artwork produced by the boys to gain some form of income were shown. These included the clever use of banana fibres to produce attractive pictorial greeting cards.

Mrs Pasteur was thanked for her very interesting presentation. Tea and conversation followed and the raffle was drawn.

The next meeting will be held on February 3 when the Rev Alan White will give a presentation on the Worcester-Birmingham Canal. Competition - a small cup and saucer.
