AN unpopular poplar tree could be getting the chop if Alvechurch landowners get the go-ahead.

The 40ft high tree in Alvechurch Playing Fields is interfering with play in a Sunday soccer side's matches.

Playing officials and spectators want the overgrown tree, which overhangs onto the pitch, cut back.

But concerned preservationists want the tree to stay and the football pitch moved.

Mr Anthony Sealey, chairman of the Alvechurch Village Society, said: "The tree was there first and it would be a shame to see it hacked about just because it's in the way."
