BEWDLEY'S John Gittus competed in the fifth annual Wrekin chess congress at Madeley.
Playing in the major tournament for grades up to 145, Gittus achieved a 50 per cent score over five rounds in one of his best ever games.
Kidderminster's John Varilone, won his match for Worcest-ershire's team for under-125 grades against Staffordshire at Redditch. The fixture ended in an 8-8 draw overall.
