A MONTHLY awards scheme has been launched to give public recognition to unsung heroes of Worcestershire's care industry.

Marcelle Smith, a senior carer of the Avery-Overall residential home in Britannia Square, Worcester, has already been nominated for an award.

The project was launched by Hallow-based Internet resource company Guide2care which says morale among the nation's carers is at its lowest.

"Primarily the aim is to honour the worth of those who work tirelessly in often thankless jobs that very few of us could do," said managing director Steve Bishop.

"True, we have to recognise there have been some horrendous stories of neglect in the media, but it is equally true that there are countless excellent staff delivering dignified care in nursing and residential homes and with domiciliary care across the country."

To nominate someone, log on to www.guide2 caretoday.co.uk or fax Guide2care on 0871 733 3767. A panel of care professionals will judge the entries.

Winners receive a quality engraved cut-glass trophy and a gift voucher for £25. Their organisation or care or nursing home will also receive a framed certificate.
