THREE Redditch fencers made their way to Fenton in Stoke-on-Trent for the Great Britain Youth Championship finals at the weekend.

Daniel Wilson, Anita Mason and Shelby Sands, all members of the Redditch Youth Fencing Club, took on the cream of UK fencers at the event after fighting through regional competitions to represent the West Midlands.

Despite having to fight off the effects of the flu, girls' captain, Sands entered the under 16 foil event.

Sands, 14, successfully fought through two pools - each of seven competitors, to be seeded 19th for the Great Britain girls under 16 tournament.

After getting through the knockout competition Sands got as far as the last 16 competitors before succumbing to Katherine McCleod, a regular fencer for the National Welsh team.

Shelby enters the GB rankings after her first ever national competition at number 20.

Wilson represented the boys under 16s and Mason, who was fencing in her first major competition in the under 12 girls event, finished ranked 34.
