TALKS to discuss the future of Droitwich Spa's historic lido took place last night (Tuesday).

Wychavon District Council's executive board met in Pershore to consider the plans submitted for the lido by campaign group Save a Lido Today (SALT).

SALT has proposed the lido be re-opened as a swimming pool and seasonal ice rink, although this would require considerable investment from the council.

Yesterday's agenda stated the board had five options for the Worcester Road facility. They are:

l Further discussions with SALT to resolve issues of concerns

l Stop discussion with SALT and demolish the lido

l Grant a lease to SALT

l Offer Droitwich Spa Town Council a long lease of the site and allow it to sublet it to SALT

l Consider marketing the site again.

The document also states SALT's latest proposals do not adequately address the council's concerns about the capital cost of the scheme, funding and operational issues or the revenue implications.

Speaking before the meeting, Martin Jennings, Wychavon's council leader, said: "We offered the same chance to all interested parties including private companies to come up with project plans to utilise the lido site.

"The executive board's main issue is to consider whether SALT's proposals have enough substance and whether they will further the best interests of all our residents."

A special meeting of Wychavon's overview and scrutiny committee, to discuss the lido, is on Wednesday, February 16 at 6.15pm in Droitwich Community Hall, in Heritage Way.
