THE organiser of a new matchstick modelling club may just have struck it lucky with a generous offer of materials.

Terry Hickman could not believe it when he was offered a supply of matches from David Drew, a member of the British Matchbox and Booklet Society.

Mr Drew and fellow society members are phillumenists, which means they collect matchbox labels, skillets, matchboxes, matchbox covers and match holders. However, the matchsticks are left redundant.

"Our members are always trying to dispose of matches but can never find anyone who needs them," said Mr Drew.

He contacted Mr Hickman through the Advertiser and believes they may be able to match his demand.

The launch of the matchstick modelling club originally had to be put on hold after Mr Hickman could not get hold of enough matches.

The Hanbury pensioner, who has built a life-size Victorian lamp from matches, decided to start the club to bring senior citizens and the disabled together.

Now, after a host of donations including one from the Droitwich Lions, he is preparing for the grand opening at the Heritage Centre in Victoria Square tomorrow (Thursday).

Kidderminster Harriers manager Stuart Hipkiss is confirmed as the famous face, who will do the honours at about 8.40am. If you can help Mr Hickman with donations of material or money, call him on 01527 821757.
