ALCESTER'S Scout and Guide groups have been refused a £190,000 lottery grant towards their new headquarters because the members are not disadvantaged enough.

Leaders were informed last week that the Big Lottery Fund had rejected the application because the project would not make any "real improvements to the lives of disadvantaged people and the well being of the community".

Chairman Jeremy Howell said: "It seems the lottery doesn't recognise the value to social cohesion that Scouting and Guiding creates. The one enduring and successful youth organisation that has been around for 80 years does not fit politically correct ideals."

Mr Howell said he and fellow committee members were disappointed with the fund's decision but remained committed to their cause.

Over the next few weeks, they will be looking at ways of reducing the cost of the building, which already has planning permission, as well as future fund-raising ideas.

They will also be looking for practical help from parents and supporters.

In a letter to parents, Mr Howell said: "A great deal of time and effort has been invested in getting the project to where it is today and this will not be wasted.

"The committee is determined to press on to secure the objective of providing a permanent home for the two organisations.

"We have an ideal site in the centre of our community. We have done the detailed design work for the building, we have planning permission and we also have approximately £60,000 in cash and pledges towards the cost of construction thanks to the generous support of a number of individuals and organisations and of parents and others who have supported and helped organise our fund-raising activities.

"Guiding and Scouting have a very long history in Alcester and, with the backing and goodwill of the community, the two organisations will continue to provide a constructive and enjoyable experience for our young citizens in the years ahead."

The next event is on Friday, February 11, when duo Rogers and Wood perform at Alcester Rugby Club. Tickets for the evening cost £10 to include supper. To book, call 01789 765457.
