ALCESTER residents can have a say in the future of their historic town hall when the new management committee is elected later this month.
Five new members will be elected to the committee on Tuesday, February 15, to help run the grade one listed building for the coming year.
The 17th century hall was built by Sir Fulke Greville as a market hall and the upper section was built some time later. In 1765 Earle Brooke revoked all claims to market tolls on condition the townspeople kept the hall in good repair.
For a number of years they did but when they let things go the then Marquis of Hertford took over again, enclosed the lower half of the building and let it to Warwickshire County Council as a magistrates court and county courtroom.
The hall was bought by the townspeople in 1919 for £620 as a memorial to the men of Alcester who gave their lives in the First World War. It is now run as a charity.
The meeting is on Tuesday, February 15, starting at 7.30pm.
