THE size of a prominent house at Callow End, near Worcester, would be increased by between 50 and 70 per cent if a proposed extension is allowed

"It would dominate the hill overlooking the village," said a neighbour, Christopher Brickell, of the plan for Stanbrook Croft, Stanbrook.

He believed the scale and proportion of the two-storey extension would be unsympathetic to the present structure, which would lose its essential character.

Speaking before a meeting of Powick Parish Council's planning committee, he also pointed out that the approach to the house, Flag Lane, was a single-width track with no passing places.

"If we meet another vehicle we sometimes have to reverse about 200 yards. If there was an increase in traffic it would be very difficult to go up and down the lane," he said.

The proposal for Stanbrook Croft includes internal alterations to the house and the demolition of a single storey part of it.

Les Davies, chairing the meeting, said a flat roof would be turned into a pitched roof, which would be an advantage, but he agreed that the house would be at least 50 per cent bigger.

The overall roofline would be no higher than at present and be more attractive than the present one, said Colin Phillips. But other members felt they wanted more guidance on the increased size before making a recommendation.

Malvern Hills planning officers are to be consulted and members will look at the site.
