THE organiser of a new matchstick modelling club in Droitwich says he is devastated only one person turned up at the launch, despite numerous enquiries.

However, Terry Hickman says he is remaining positive that the club will take off.

Kidderminster Harriers boss Stuart Watkiss took time out of his schedule to officially open the new club yesterday morning.

"I'm really grateful to Stuart for coming along as I know he is a very busy man," said Mr Hickman. "But I am so disappointed that only one person came along to support us.

"I had so many enquiries from people who wanted to join the club and I was desperate to get it up and running so that these people could come along, but it was such a let-down. The only man who came was from St John's in Worcester."

Mr Hickman, of Court Close, Hanbury, decided to set up the club to bring senior citizens and the disabled together

He has booked and paid for the Community Centre in Heritage Way for the next six months and is hoping he has not wasted his pension.

The launch of the club was originally put on hold because Mr Hickman could not get hold of enough matches, but the offers are now flooding in.

"Old people have sent in matches and me and my wife have been cutting off the live heads," he said.

The club also received a generous donation from David Drew, a member of the British Matchbox and Booklet Society.

The club will run every Thursday from 9am to 1pm. Mr Hickman is also hoping schools and community groups will take advantage of the club as a way of learning new skills.
