POWICK returned to Worcester League division two action on Saturday, after a six-week absence, against a weakened West Malvern.
POWICK 6, WEST MALVERN 0
The first goal was long over-due with chance after chance went begging but it finally came from Dean Drinkwater. Kevin Downes gained possession and played a perfectly weighted ball through a sleepy West defence to the charging Drinkwater, who rounded the keeper and tapped into an open goal.
Goal two was a great effort from Mike Cole after he rounded three defenders and drove the ball from distance into the bottom left-hand corner. Powick were coasting and this showed in their poor passing as they gave the ball away on numerous occasions.
Only 2-0 at half time and stern talking encouraged a 10 minute spell of relentless pressure for the West defence and this resulted in further goals. Henderson skipped and tricked his way to the by-line and crossed deep to the back post for Stu Harvey, who used his head to cushion the ball back to the lurking Drinkwater, who smashed in from close range.
Sam Dakin was brought on in a central midfield holding role and performed very well. Both Dakin and Abba prevented West Malvern even venturing into Powick's half for long periods of time.
Dale Humphries, who took over the captain's role after Henderson came off injured, was a constant threat down the left-hand side and came close on several occasions.
Ben Pearson got on the score sheet against his old club with an outstanding strike from a tight angle, pushing for goal of the season.
Dave Beats came close after being played in by a Pearson through-ball but the visiting keeper palmed his weak shot away. Beats still unable to get his first goal for the club.
Mike Cole grabbed himself a brace when Pearson delivered an excellent ball into the West 18-yard box for Cole to run on to and slot past the advancing keeper. Drinkwater finished the game completing his hat-trick with a penalty kick late into the game for a 6-0 scoreline.
Powick are away to Kempsey tomorrow (Saturday). Meet at the ground at 1pm. Any problems ring Andy or Lee.
West Malvern return to Phipps Cup action with a home game against Koinonia. Meet at ground at 1.30pm for a 2.15pm kick-off.
