Malvern Hills Science Park could be about to change hands.

Worcestershire County Council's cabinet will decide on Tuesday (February 8) whether to buy the park's freehold from its current owners QinetiQ.

The council is considering buying the land using money from retail development agency Advantage West Midlands, as part of its Central Technology Belt plan. This is aimed at boosting the economic strength of the West Midlands.

Mike Middleton, the county council's head of economic development, said buying the science park site would give the authority a greater control of its future and a say in how it developed.

"The cash QinetiQ receives from the sale will also allow it to progress the modernisation of its main Malvern site for technology research," he said.

The price Worcestershire County Council would pay for the site is still being negotiated.

Science park manager Nigel Shaw was unavailable for comment yesterday (Thursday), as the Malvern Gazette went to press.

Malvern Hills District Council was the principal financier of the park, investing more than £1 million in 1998.
