DANNY Carey-Bertram loves leading the line for Hereford United and is intent on nailing down a permanent place up front following a magical January.

The former West Bromwich Albion trainee lashed in six goals from four starts last month, his most productive spell for the Bulls since joining the club in the summer of 2003.

Burton Albion and Accrington Stanley felt the full force of 20-year-old Carey-Bertram, a pair of braces ending both clubs' chances in the GLS Cup and FA Trophy respectively.

He continued his fine form by scoring against Wrexham in the LDV Vans Trophy area semi-final, while video evidence credited Carey-Bertram with the opening goal in last Sunday's 2-0 win at Aldershot.

After spending most of his time on the bench during his one-and-a-half years at Edgar Street, Carey-Bertram is confident of earning a regular berth in United's starting line-up.

However, he understands there is strong competition from fellow strikers Adam Stansfield, David Brown and Lee Mills.

Carey-Bertram said: "I've been waiting all season for my chance and the gaffer has shown faith with me in the last few weeks. I've done myself justice by scoring six goals.

"It's been difficult this season because I had a problem with my knee and hamstring and it kept me out for two months. Then I've got competition from Browny, Millsy and Adam. All I could do is work hard and bide my time.

"All three of them started the season off well and it was disappointing for me because it makes you feel like you want to be out there doing your bit. The other three have got the experience on me.

"But I've always thought I could do the job for Hereford up front. The gaffer's always believed in me and I believe in my own ability.

"At the moment, I'm doing well. I'm just looking to keep my place in the side. I've got to keep scoring, working hard in training and doing my best in games.

"But I'm enjoying things. It's the best feeling in football, scoring goals and running to your own fans."
