THANK you for publishing Mr David Wornham's letter in reply to my criticism of the lack of warning on proven dangerous bends on the A44 road near Peopleton/Drakes Broughton.
I cannot decide whether Mr Wornham is an apologist for the county council or a publicity person for the Institute of Advanced Motorists.
Of course the roads would be safer if all drivers were to undergo a course of advanced driving. That is like saying that if all shoppers were to have a degree in mathematics they stand less chance of being short-changed.
This does not absolve the county council of their responsibility of warning of potential hazards on a stretch of road.
Being a cynic, I could argue it is because roads signage costs money and other forms of safety warnings such as speed cameras actually earn money. I bet if they decided they were to put a speed camera on this road they would soon find the money for the legally required warning signs.
Some research was carried out on the safety engineering of this road even before it was diverted on to the former B4084. It was decided that the road was dangerous even then. Now it is diverted it is even more dangerous. It has been ranked as among the most dangerous roads in the UK.
I am asking the county council to recognise its responsibility and take action to reduce the need for flowers on this roadside.
TERRY JAMES
