DROITWICH councillors who spoke against plans to reopen the town's Lido have been accused of failing to support the town and its people.
Town and county councillor Peter Pinfield launched a scathing attack on councillors, naming them individually, at a meeting of Droitwich Spa Town Council last night.
"I do not expect favours from Wychavon but I did hope that councillors from here (Droitwich) would speak up for the town," he said.
"They know how the people feel and how the town council felt and they ignored that.
"There are only two with any guts, you madam Mayor (Coun Ann Taft) and Coun Richard Morris. You are putting the town first which is right and proper."
Wychavon District Council's Conservative executive board last week rejected plans by campaign group SALT - Save a Lido Today - to reopen the historic open air pool because of fears of its financial viability.
At last night's meeting Coun Taft, who has worked closely with SALT, proposed that the council should send a ''strongly-worded'' letter to the district council asking it to reconsider the board's decision before a final decision is made on Tuesday, February 22.
Nine of the 12 councillors present voted in favour of Coun Taft's proposal, while two, Eileen Hope and Mike Barratt, voted against and Terry Spencer abstained.
Coun Hope defended her decision saying that if there was no money from Wychavon the Lido would have to be funded through the town council at a cost of £100 a year from each tax payer.
"I stood on my feet last week and thank God for democracy," she said. "I could not stand on my feet with the people I represent and the people I talk to if I put that money on their community charge."
The council will now write to Wychavon in the hope of influencing its final decision.
n A special meeting of the council's overview and scrutiny committee to discuss the Lido will take place at the Community Centre, Heritage Way, Droitwich, on Wednesday, February 16 from 6.15pm.
n SALT will be holding a public meeting on Thursday for people to view its plans for the Lido and give their comments. It will take place at the Community Centre in Heritage Way from 7.30pm.
