SATURDAY proved to be a decent day for us despite the fact our match with Crawley Town was called off.
Results went in our favour with Tiverton, Hednesford and Havant & Waterlooville all drawing and missing the chance to overtake us in the league.
The decision to call off the game was taken early on and with more rain predicted was the right one at the time especially with Crawley having to come such a long way. There's nothing more galling than making a long trip only to turn round on arrival.
The league seems to be getting tighter by the week with everyone taking points off each other and I think the Dr Martens Premier Division can justifiably claim to be the most competitive feeder league in the country.
Every match you win in this division, you earn. There are no freebies.
It's not for nothing that the likes of Burton Albion shifted leagues or that Kettering didn't come back into the Dr Martens following their relegation from the Conference.
The festive programme has given us four difficult but winnable matches and a great opportunity to go into the new year with our tails up.
Nothing can be taken for granted though!
In previous years you could go through the fixture programme ticking off where you were pretty sure of getting points but the degree of certainty in predicting results has diminished.
Welling, Dover and Moor Green may all be below us in the table but we'll need to be as focused for them as we are for the visit of fourth-placed Stafford on New Year's Day.
Welling are our first visitors on Saturday and they've picked up of late so we need to be at our best to make sure we get the right outcome.
Chris Taylor will be in goal in place of the suspended Danny McDonnell and he's a keeper I know well and who I once tried to sign at Burton but he went into the Conference. With keepers you have to be aware of who is around and it definitely helps to have a few contacts.
He's an experienced player and will be more than welcome to stick around with us and train until he finds a new club.
Looking at the forthcoming fixtures it's about time we had a win against the likes of Stafford.
I've spoken to Phil Robinson and they are up there doing well again if not quite as well as last year but they are still formidable.
Moor Green is another place we are due a win.
Part of making sure we start winning on a regular basis involves getting consistency of performance from the players.
The most overused word among all the managers I speak to is inconsistency.
They can't believe they are seeing the same players from previous games where they've played really well.
That's definitely been our problem to date!
We've had a real mixed bag in the opening half of the season. Good results from bad performances, times where we've deserved something but got nothing and occasionally good results and good performances at the same time.
Talking about it to the players the other week we were up front and honest with them and said we didn't know what we were going to get and they took that on board.
To stake a level of consistency it's not necessarily about achieving 100 per cent but the closer you get to that figure, dictates the more games you win and ultimately the more successful you are.
This league is crying out for someone to grab it but it looks like no one wants to win it though in such a tightly contested league Weymouth's six point lead could be significant.
